The country is the fourth largest country in the continent of Asia and the seventh largest country in the world. It has a population of nearly 1.2 billion people (which is more than 23 times that of the UK!). China is the only country which has more people than India.

The southern part of India is a peninsula that is surrounded by water on three sides. The Bay of Bengal lies to the right, the Arabian Sea to the left and the Indian Ocean lies to the south of this peninsula.
Many people have heard of the Taj Mahal (shown above), being one of the most famous tourist attractions in the world. Here are some unusual and fun facts about India that you might not have even heard of!
The Indian civilization is the oldest in the world, and in spite of being the most powerful empire long ago, India has never invaded another country.
The highest range of mountains in the world called the Himalayas, originates in north India.
Though it is hard to believe, because so many of it's people can speak English, India is the largest English speaking country in the world.
In India, cows are considered sacred and will not be harmed in any way. Very often, they are found in the middle of city causing a traffic jam.
Though it has gained a reputation as being a ‘cricket-crazy’ nation, the national game of India is hockey.
Indian history and culture is very rich in diverse art forms. From these, dance is the most popular. Every state in India has its own traditional dance form. Indian dances are recognized as a form of worship.
Indian tradition speaks of a practice called ‘dowry’ wherein a girl’s parents are supposed to pay a certain amount to her groom at the time of marriage. This practice is considered illegal now, but is still widely practiced among the less educated.
‘Sati’ was another tradition which is no longer done. Here, the women jumped onto their husband's funeral pyres if they died before them.
Tirupathi, situated in the south of India, is the most visited pilgrimage site in the world. What is even more interesting is that once there, people shave off their hair as an offering to God.
The popular game of Snakes and Ladders was first invented by Indian kings.
The Indian Railways employs more people than any other establishment in the world.
Algebra, calculus and trigonometry all originated from India. It’s no wonder Indians are supposed to be math geniuses!
Sanskrit, a language of Indian origin, is the mother of every other Indo-European language.
After the United States of America, India has the largest number of software developers.
Along with Japan and America, India is the only country that produces super computers.
India is the largest producer of milk in the world. It also ranks among the top five in the production of sugar, fish, cotton, tea, coffee, spices, rubber and silk.
In spite of having such a quickly developing economy, more than 36% of the population of India is below the poverty line. That means that they do not earn enough to feed themselves and their family.
Though it is one of the most diverse countries in the world, Indians live together in harmony
